O'Neil auditioned for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges about the performance. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were astonished at the result and exhorted fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the bottom 3 again after an impressive string of performances. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil beat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
